I added a Tutorials page to my site as a way to consolidate my activities mentoring in various topics. If I spend enough time and have enough students of a particular subject I’ll try to write out my ideas. The first few I’ve done are about the Apple application iWeb: I’ve found there’s a dearth of information on the actual mechanics of the software though its often picked up by Mac users to build their first site.
iWeb: Pimp Your Page
I was already designing websites with professional applications, and with code when I started using iWeb. The original version of my photoblog, Munjeli Fotobox (currently built in WordPress) was built to demonstrate the software, and learn its quirks. Happily, I can share my explorations with you. While widely considered a consumer, amateur application, iWeb is used by many people with strong technical skills, especially artists. The series of tutorials I’ve published isn’t for beginners: there are plenty of Getting Started tutorials on line already. My intention is to support the advanced use of the program by sophisticated users, and promote iWeb as a professional design application.
One of the most common issues encountered by people who hire web designers is that they pay to have a site designed, and then continue paying to have it updated (the “Golden Handcuffs”). A talented designer could build a site in iWeb, and the user could do the maintenance, uploading photos or adding blog entries. Or you can just study the tutorials and learn to build the greatest iWeb site EVER!
For the record, the original site was built in iWeb ’08, and I’m currently working in iWeb ’09. There are a few differences between them, particularly with regards to publishing to a server other than Mobile Me.
